When Two or Three are Gathered

On the Fifteenth Sunday after Pentecost, Lay Preacher Megan Preston Meyer reflects on Jesus’ words in Matthew 18:15–20 and what they teach us about conflict, humility, reconciliation, and discerning God’s truth together.
“Where two or three are gathered in my name, I am there among them” is often heard as a comforting reminder of Christ’s presence. But in its original context, Jesus is speaking to his disciples about something much more difficult: what happens when members of a community disagree.
Conflict is inevitable when people care deeply about their church, their community, and how they are called to live out the Gospel. Yet Jesus calls us not simply to win arguments or prove ourselves right, but to approach one another with humility and seek to restore relationships.
Megan explores what it means to speak the truth in love, to recognize that our own perspective may be incomplete, and to discern God’s will together. Even when reconciliation is difficult, we are reminded that we never get to simply “wipe our hands” of one another. We remain called to love, forgive, listen, and remain open to the possibility that we ourselves may need to be changed.
And through it all—whether two or three are gathered, an entire community comes together, or we find ourselves alone—Christ is among us.

I like the way this topic connects a small gathering with meaningful connection and shared experience. It also made me think about how simple activities can bring people closer without needing a large group.
